Poppy Appeal launch
For several years now we at the Chilterns have been pleased to host the launch of the Annual Poppy Day Appeal organised by The Royal British Legion, which celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2011, and this year we will invite them back on Saturday 29th October.

The Royal British Legion is the nation's custodian of Remembrance, ensuring that people remember those who have given their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. The poppy has become the symbol of Remembrance worn during the weeks leading to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

The British Legion was formed on 15 May 1921 bringing together four National Organisations of ex-Service men that had established themselves after the Great War of 1914-1918. They were granted "Royal" status in 1971.

Poppies were first suggested as a symbol of Remembrance in the USA by Miss Moina Michael in November 1918 and were adopted by the American Legion in 1920. In August 1921, Madame Guerin introduced her poppies, made by a French-American charity's widows, to the British Legion. The next suitable occasion for a poppy-linked appeal was Armistice Day and so the first Poppy Appeal was born.
11th Charity Golf Day
The 11th Annual Shopmobility Charity golf day organised by the Chilterns Shopping Centre was held on Wednesday 14th September at Wycombe Heights Golf Club. Fourteen teams this year played fine golf in an effort to win the trophy. With fast greens and putting such an important issue hitting the pot was always going to be difficult. With an impressive 88 points Flackwell Heath Old Boys were once again the out right winners. Whilst there are still monies to be received it is expected that Shopmobility will benefit to the tune of nearly £2500.

Mayor Making Ceremony
High Wycombe celebrated its annual mayor making ceremony on Saturday 21st May. The annual custom dates back to medieval times and is unique to this Buckinghamshire market town.

Weight is no longer an election issue, but for custom's sake the new mayor, Jane White, charter trustees and honorary burgesses obliged by sitting on a specially erected scale to have their weights recorded and compared with last year's.

Traditionally the "macebearer" dressed in traditional costume rings a bell and calls out the weight. When he adds the words "and no more!" the crowd cheers as a sign of their appreciation and gratitude for hard work done for the community. But if he shouts "and some more!" it means the mayor has been indulging in too much good living at ratepayers' expense and the crowd jeers and boos.

In years gone by they would have also pelted the offending person with tomatoes and rotten fruit. Luckily for the Hon Burgess Bill Pollard this year's crowd heard “and no more” when being weighed.
Patriotic Party at the Chilterns
With the Royal Wedding and the long Easter Break, the Chilterns Shopping Centre got in the party mood on Easter Saturday, 23rd April.

The Union Jack bunting was out and the Centre ablaze in red, white and blue ready for a ‘Right Royal Knees Up’ complete with a traditional Street Party atmosphere!

British Icon, John Bull, hosted three ‘Great Britain Street Party’ shows with CBeebies 'I Can Cook!' presenter Katy Ashworth.

Little Royal Subjects and their Patriotic Parents enjoyed a fun filled day featuring a race to make up the Queen’s Face; Blow the Hat off a Bobby games; Royal icing competition as well as singing, dancing and entertainment with catering Queen Katy.
